PROTECT-EUROPE is an EU4Health project that champions gender-neutral vaccination programmes in EU member states to protect everyone against cancers caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) e.g. cervical, anal, penile, vaginal, vulval, and head & neck.

As part of the project, we are delivering a series of ten masterclasses on different aspects of HPV vaccination, and all contributing to more effective public health messaging on the virus and the vaccine.

Our tenth and final masterclass was held on 27 November. In this session, we have explored best practices for effectively reaching and supporting at-risk communities to protect them against the human papillomavirus (HPV) through vaccination.

HPV is a leading cause of several cancers, but vaccination rates remain disproportionately low among marginalised groups, including low-income individuals, LGBTQ populations, rural communities, migrants and those with limited access to healthcare. This masterclass provided actionable insights on how to overcome the barriers some of these communities face, including new ways to build trust and create tailored, culturally sensitive outreach programmes that resonate with individuals and whole families.

Together, we can work toward a future where all individuals, regardless of their background or circumstances, are protected against HPV and its associated cancers.
